A new food stall is promising to bring the heat of Mexico to Blackburn, as well as marking the latest chapter in a family’s love affair with Blackburn Market.
Hugo Burrito opened in Blackburn market on earlier this month serving burritos, tacos and other ‘Tex-Mex’ inspired food.
The eatery has been launched by David Wilcock who becomes the fifth generation of his family to own a stall on Blackburn market.
David, 33, who lives in Knuzden, Blackburn, said: “This is a dream come true for me. My family have been on the market since the late1800’s and the original Greens Poultry is still going to this day. More recently my great grandad Stan Green worked on Blackburn market in the 1930s and 40s when it was opposite where Marks and Spencer is now. My grandma worked there before starting the popular Beryl’s chicken stall in the old Ainsworth Street market in the 1970s and that’s where my mum and aunty also worked, later buying the business off my gran.
“I worked on the stall myself from being 13 years old. and like many others here, market trading is in our blood. I’m thrilled to be back on Blackburn market with our own venture.”
David has also named one of the Burritos off the menu the Berilo’s Chicken Chipotle in a tribute to David’s grandma Beryl, 81.
Hugo Burrito, which has both a breakfast and lunch menu, is located close to the food court in Blackburn market [on Stall C3 next to Sandersons and directly behind Well Bread].
David, who has worked in food and beverage sales for the past decade, added: “There’s been a real trend towards Mexican fast food in the UK, but we’re not just trying to copy that. We’ve designed a menu that is simple but packed with a wide choice of fresh flavours and as much or little spice as you desire. We’ve put a lot of time and effort into developing our menu and taste-testing our food with friends and family.
“The menu we’ve come up with will really have mouths watering.”
Hugo Burrito will source the majority of its ingredients locally and aim to support other Lancashire businesses, including Total Foodservice, PK Foods and Khanjra.
